One of the best known and most influential university librarians of his time he developed the library at Leeds U from very modest beginnings into one of the foremost in the country, taking full advantage of the outstanding Brotherton benefactions. He was active in the LA and particularly in its University and Research Section (University, College and Research Section) and contributed the chapter on the buildings of the United States and Canada in the LA's 1938 Survey of libraries.
